#NaPoWriMo2019 – Day 22: ‘Closer to Thirty’

Closer to Thirty

I’m closer to thirty than twenty now
and somehow that makes me feel more ancient
than half the fossils on the Dorset coast.
A melodramatic notion, I will
admit, but still it’s quite tricky to shake
the thought that my youth has slunk off without
much fanfare, though, if I’m fair, I think we
parted our ways a long while ago,
when I wasn’t paying much attention,
sometime around the same time I handed
in my frankly mediocre Master’s
dissertation that I sincerely hope
will never see the light of day again.

It’s a bit tough not to just write myself
off as a failure who has wasted the
the happier half of his twenties, as I
now while out the weeks without prospects
or employment or employment prospects
and my only achievement of recent
note was befriending the neighbours’ skittish
kitty after nearly half a year
of kissy-noises. That’s currently me
in all of my crumbling, stale-loaf
glory starting the next chapter in the
ongoing story of me being a
disaster of one kind or another.
