Never, Never, Never
As time aches on, I more and more think,
this country needs to be burned to its bare foundations.
We’ve always been a damp racist mess
but were meant to be painstakingly getting better.
A foolish thought, though, let’s be real;
xenophobic islands don’t change their rocks that easy,
not when it’s oh so much simpler
to lay blame on the mainland for our self-inflictions.
Soon just a rock in a lonely sea
pathetic but now independent, apparently,
for working with friends in unity,
means oppression if we don’t always get our own way.
I crave to tear these past years down
delete our decisions and reboot it all from scratch
or we’ll leave a legacy forged
from fear of foreign voices on our morning bus.
But it seems that is the people’s will;
vainglory and bigotry through democracy rules;
and, heck, the country will burn itself
without us moaners having to light any matches,
as we cut all ties and set sail
straight into the fire in pursuit of blue passports.
