REVIEW: ‘The Quest: A Fantasy Musical’ by Questing Vole Productions

4 Stars

You had me at “fantasy musical”. I love fantasy fiction, I love musicals, it would be difficult for me not to like this show. It helps that this eager group of performers bring all their enthusiasm to bringing that premise to life in a fun-filled loving parody of classic fantasy clichés. It’s easy to tell that the creators of The Quest genuinely love fantasy and rip the genre’s most tired tropes to shreds with nothing but the most honest affection.

An already charming and unique musical comedy that’s absolutely nailed by this group of talented young performers with a near overwhelming degree of skill.

REVIEW: ‘Lucky’ by Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society

4 Stars

(written from the 10/08/18 showing):

I’m always a fan of original musicals at the Fringe because, more often that not, they’ll prove to be something quite special. Lucky certainly has the makings of something very special, even if it is still a work in progress with a development and growth to do.

REVIEW: ‘Face 2 Face’ by Two Stones One Bird

2.5 Stars

“Technology is bad, m’kay”.  That seems to be essentially what this show boiled down to. It was heavy handed and shallow with a very tired message that  I’m kind of sick to death of seeing media use. The entire thing has an unpleasant air of shallow smugness, determined to paint anyone the slightest bit appreciative of modern tech as rude, unpleasant, and unlikable. It’s not just the message isn’t even a good one, it’s also just how heavy-handedly the play forces that message down your throat. It’s unrelenting and poorly handled with the characters you’re meant to like and root for coming across as insufferably self-righteous.

REVIEW: ‘Elegy for an Echo’ by Gin & Chronic Theatre Company

*Note: The following review was written over two months after the fact due to writer’s block and my being a disaster of a person.*

The premise of this show is original and intriguing; a pill that allows a person to interact with a deceased loved one, recreated from their sensory memories. It may have similarities to existing sci-fi films, books, etc, but I have never seen exactly this concept done before, and its done pretty damn excellently. After having been told from many different sources, since the first days of the festival, that this a pretty damn brilliant show, I was finally able to make time to see it on my third-to-last day in the city.

Of all the show’s I saw at the 2017 Fringe, this one probably had to most relaxed and casual atmosphere. It essentially comprised an hour of four young friends musing on what it means to be an adult.

REVIEW: ‘The Writers’ Room’ by Degrees of Error

Brought to us by the ever-talented Degrees of Error, creators of Murder She Didn’t Write, The Writers’ Room provides a new and creative set-up for an improv show. It’s very much a ‘what it says on the tin’ kind of show; a group of screenwriters pick through crumpled suggestions in a wastepaper bin trying to find something with which they can create the next big blockbuster.
